Well, we've come to that point in the season--the point in which you just know the end of the football season is near. There are few things in life that should not be taken as seriously as we football fans take our football, but we just can't help it. So I have to ask, because last week I predicted we'd be seeing Brady vs. Manning on Sunday. Hey John Fox, what was THAT? There is conservative, and then there is dumbass. And that was a bit plate of dumbass. The Broncos signed Peyton Manning to get them a championship, and instead of putting the ball in his hands with 31 seconds and two timeouts and a short distance for Matt Prater's field goal range, they take a knee, obliterating the 31 seconds and the timeouts, and eventually lose the game in double OT. If you're a Ravens fan, you should send John Fox a thank you note. What's more, John Elway reportedly had Fox's back. Hey Elway, would you have been okay taking a knee in that situation? That's what I thought. Now the picks....
Last Week: 2-2
Playoff Record: 4-4
Season Record: 169-95
San Francisco at Atlanta--With all due respect to the Seahawks, Atlanta has not seen a team as deep on both sides of the ball as the Niners. And let's face it--the Falcons almost choked away the game last week, which would have made it possibly one of the worst choke jobs ever, and would have had everyone calling Mike Smith and Matt Ryan chokers forever. The Niners can run, they can pass and their QB is fast and elusive and will give the Falcons fits the way Russell Wilson did. And they can play D as well as anyone the Falcons have faced this season. Niners 34, Falcons 24
Baltimore at New England--A rematch of last year's game, but the Ravens have a different kicker this year because last year's kicker, Billy Cundiff, is watching at home after shanking the potential game winning 32 yard field goal a year ago. Ray Lewis is playing with house money after Joe Flacco pulled a Houdini and John Fox gift-wrapped another week for Lewis' Ravens. Are the Ravens good enough to win this? Absolutely. Is there any way the Hoodie and Brady blow another opportunity for a ring? No freaking way. Patriots 30, Ravens 27
PS: I need to mention how, as a Giants fan, this weekend's games are especially painful to watch. Last year, the final four was almost identical, with the Falcons playing the role of the Giants this season. The good thing is for San Francisco and New England, they won't have the Giants to get in their heads this time.
PPS: I don't want to see a Harbaugh Bowl. And who in their right mind wants to see a Falcons/Ravens Super Bowl? Blah.

NFL Picks: Divisional Round Weekend
Here we are, at one of the best (or maybe the best) weekend of the NFL season--divisional round games to determine who goes to the AFC and NFC championship games. Two games Saturday and two on Sunday, and eight really great teams battling it out. Get your popcorn ready....
Last Week: 2-2
Playoff Record: 2-2
Season Record: 167-93
Baltimore at Denver--Peyton Manning didn't just come back to the game following a year rehabilitating his new neck. He wants it all, maybe to catch up to his little brother Eli in Super Bowl rings. And this Broncos team is at least as good as some of Manning's best Colts' teams. But this game will be won on the backs of Denver's D, which is going to frustrate Joe Flacco all day long. Broncos 27, Ravens 13
Green Bay at San Francisco--In Week 1, the Niners traveled to Green Bay and upset the Packers. This time, it's in their place and a spot in the NFC title game for the second straight year is in their grasp. The question is, will Aaron Rodgers be in the grasp of Justin Smith and company before he can inflict damage with that sick group of receivers. And can Frank Gore and Colin Kaepernick inflict damage on that subpar Packers' D. Yes and yes. Niners 26, Packers 17
Seattle at Atlanta--Seeing the Seahawks come back from a 14-0 deficit on the road in DC to score 24 unanswered points has to have the Falcons shaking in their boots. They got the 1-seed for this, to face one of the hottest teams in the NFL? I hate to tell you this, Falcons' fan--but you're about to get punked in the playoffs yet again. And that's probably good for all of us who do not want to see you get smoked in the NFC title game. Seahawks 24, Falcons 20
Houston at New England--It was only one month ago that the Pats began to expose the weaknesses of the Texans and crushed them 42-14 at Foxboro. So it's not like much has changed with either of these squads, except that Houston won a playoff game already. I don't think Tom Brady will put up 42 again, but he won't have to. And then, get ready for a Brady vs. Manning AFC championship game. Patriots 28, Texans 17

NFL Picks: Wildcard weekend
Greetings everyone! Welcome back to my picks blog, which has been on hiatus since I was commissioned to pick games on Big Blue View the past couple of years. But here we are, and we'll be picking the games through the postseason as well as other sporting events or big games from time to time. And now, let's get to it!
Last week: 11-5 (on Big Blue View)
Season record: 165-91
Cincinnati at Houston--The sexy pick here is the Bengals. Everyone is picking the Bengals because they are hot and the Texans are not. On the other hand, with their stout defense and efficient offense, the Bengals are more than a stepping stone for the 3-seed this year, as opposed to last season when they were happy to be there. But if the Texans' O-line can open some holes for Arian Foster, Matt Schaub may be able to use play-action to find Andre Johnson downfield. And let's face it, this is the first must-win game the Texans have played all year, and they are too good to blow it. Texans 20, Bengals 16
Minnesota at Green Bay--If you watched that game last week, or if you've seen Aaron Rodgers play much football, you saw that look in his eye and that will to make things happen even when it looks bleak. Unfortunately Rodgers doesn't play defense, and Adrian Peterson is maybe the sickest running back since Walter Payton or Jim Brown. But at Lambeau under the lights, there is positively no way the Pack lets their division rival do to them what the Giants did to them last season. Packers 38, Vikings 24
Indianapolis at Baltimore--That's not Peyton Manning coming to town, but young Andrew Luck and the upstart Colts. This could be Ray Lewis' last game ever, but this Ravens' D is not what it used to be just like Lewis isn't what he used to be. And I don't trust Joe Flacco in a big game, I just don't. But here is the bottom line--there is absolutely no way the football gods deprive us of that dream match up next week of the Colts against Peyton Manning's Broncos. Colts 23, Ravens 20
Seattle at Washington--This, to me, is the most difficult game of the weekend to pick. On the one hand, you have the Seahawks, who have been blowing past everyone and would have blown past the Niners in the standings if Roger Goodell got his 18- or 19-week season. Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and a brick wall defense have this team as an outside Super Bowl pick. But wait, there is the matter of RG3 and Alfred Morris and an also-red-hot Redskins team playing at home. There are no ties in the playoffs, so someone has to win and someone has to lose. Redskins 24, Seahawks 20

NFL Picks: Week 2
Last Week: 7-9
Season Record: 7-9
Hey folks. Don't give up on me after one week! It was a rough one, to be sure, with lots of weird and lopsided upsets. But that's why they play the games, and we have to get our footing. So let's roll into Week 2.....
Oakland at Buffalo--Did anyone think these two teams would be 1-0 heading into this weekend? But they are, both on road wins. I guess I'm going to give this one to the Bills solely on the fact that they racked up 40 points on the Chiefs--and also because they have one extra day of rest. Bills 21, Raiders 14
Green Bay at Carolina--Speaking about rest, the Packers will have had ten days since their opener, while the Panthers had to fly home from Arizona after a tough but encouraging loss, in which Cam Newton threw for a ridiculous 422 yards. He is going to see some pressure Sunday, however--Mr. Newton, meet Mr. Matthews. Packers 27, Panthers 13
Kansas City at Detroit--Man, I wouldn't want to be a Chiefs fan right now. Lions 35, Chiefs 17
Cleveland at Indianapolis--The Colts' fans will get to see just how bad their team is up close. The Browns need to regroup, but I have a bad feeling for them here. Colts 24, Browns 20
Tampa Bay at Minnesota--Just when you thought it was safe to make a pick, you get this quandary. Do you take the young and talented Bucs on the road, or the Donny Mack led Vikings at home? Argh. Bucs 31, Vikings 24
Chicago at New Orleans--For as good as Jay Cutler looked last Sunday, he may struggle against a revamped Saints D, even though New Orleans gave up 42 to Green Bay. I mean, that was the Packers. The Bears' D, however, nearly shut the Falcons out. Saints 23, Bears 16
Jacksonville at NY Jets--How did the Jets get two home games to start the season? Anyway, they will fare a bit better against the Jags and a shutout wouldn't even make me flinch. Jets 17, Jaguars 6
Seattle at Pittsburgh--Poor Pete Carroll, poor Tarvaris Jackson, poor Seahawks' defense. The Steelers are going to take their Week 1 frustrations out and Seattle can't stop them. Steelers 38, Seahawks 10
Baltimore at Tennessee--I lived in Nashville for seven years and they have great fans there. But they will run into a buzz-saw in this one. Ravens 27, Titans 10
Arizona at Washington--Wow, Rex Grossman picked apart the Giants like it was his job, and it is. I'm not sure the Cards are a better team than my Giants, but they might be. Still, the Skins will be 2-0 after Sunday. Redskins 29, Cardinals 22
Dallas at San Francisco--Tony Romo choke alert! Okay, that was low. Or maybe not. Are the Niners improved or did they just face a weak opponent in the Seahawks last Sunday? Cowboys 24, Niners 13
Cincinnati at Denver--Man, another tough call. The young and hungry Bengals can't possibly be 2-0, can they? Nah. Broncos 30, Bengals 20
Houston at Miami--This one could be interesting as well. In fact, I'm picking an upset. Dolphins 24, Texans 20
San Diego at New England--Tom Brady won't throw for over 500 yards against a tough Chargers' pass D, but they will still win. Patriots 23, Chargers 20
Philadelphia at Atlanta--Probably the game of the week. The high flying Eagles bring Michael Vick back to Atlanta, and meanwhile the Falcons have their home opener, and they are always tough in the dome. Falcons 26, Eagles 24
St. Louis at NY Giants--The Giants have to play better in their home opener than they did against the Redskins in Week 1. And can gimpy Sam Bradford will face a heavy pass rush and a raucous New Jersey crowd. Giants 27, Rams 24

Week 1 NFL Picks
Last night: 1-0
Season record: 1-0
And here we go with the rest of the Week 1 games. Happy football season everyone!
Pittsburgh at Baltimore--Wow, the NFC North wastes no time pitting two vicious opponents against each other. Of course, the Ravens are still going to hold a grudge after the Steelers sent them home in the playoffs en route to the Super Bowl. Steelers 16, Ravens 13
Atlanta at Chicago--Another extremely interesting matchup. Will the Bears' D pick up where they left off when they reached the NFC title game, or will their offensive line crumble as they did too often last season? Will the Falcons re-emerge as a contender. With Julio Jones, Matt Ryan has yet another stud target. Falcons 24, Bears 17
Cincinnati at Cleveland--Not quite Ravens/Steelers, but this features a team that is on the rise (Browns) with a team in extreme rebuilding mode (Bengals). I think the new era of Browns' respectability has begun. Browns 20, Bengals 10
Indianapolis at Houston--I don't think Matt Schaub is used to being the better QB in this matchup, but he is now that Kerry Collins is leading the Colts with Peyton Manning on the shelf.
The bigger question, though, is whether or not Arian Foster will play. Texans 33, Colts 20
Tennessee at Jacksonville--Matt Hasselbeck vs. Luke McCown. Are you kidding me? Titans 27, Jaguars 24
Buffalo at Kansas City--The Bills actually played hard down the stretch last year, and the Chiefs won their division before getting smoked by the Ravens in the playoffs. Chiefs 30, Bills 17
Philadelphia at St. Louis--The Eagles are being touted as the "Dream Team," which, as a Giants fan, makes me want to vomit. And while I'd love to see Steve Spagnuolo's D rock the Eagles, they can't keep Michael Vick contained all day. Eagles 31, Rams 16
Detroit at Tampa Bay--These are two very improved teams and this could be one of the best games of the week. All in all though, I'm going to take the home team on opening day. Bucs 21, Lions 18
Carolina at Arizona--Cam Newton vs. Kevin Kolb. Definitely more interesting than Hasselbeck/McCown, but this game? Not very interesting at all. Panthers 28, Cards 24
Minnesota at San Diego--The Vikings are somewhat in transition but with Donovan McNabb bringing experience on offense, they might avoid the NFC North basement. The Chargers are hyped once again, but they have to prove it to me. Chargers 38, Vikings 21
Seattle at San Francisco--Yeah, I know the Seahawks were a pleasant surprise by going 7-9 and then shocking the Saints in the playoffs, but Tarvaris Jackson? Really? The Niners meanwhile counter with Alex Smith. Really? Niners 20, Seahawks 6
NY Giants at Washington--An emotional contest that marks the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. The Giants seem to have the Redskins' number the last few years, but I'll be honest--so do a lot of other teams. Giants 24, Redskins 20
Dallas at NY Jets--Part two of the emotional 9/11 tribute. This one features two teams with high hopes and lots of hard hitting defenders. And will Tony Romo be all the way back? I have to see that to believe it. Jets 17, Cowboys 13
New England at Miami--Part 1 of the Monday Night opener, and another fierce division rivalry. Tom Brady adds Ochocinco and the Pats' D adds big Albert (if you think I'm going to call him Fat Albert, you're crazy...oops!). The Dolphins have Reggie Bush, a still-disturbed Brandon Marshall and a kicker who can boom it 60 yards in Dan Carpenter. But they also have Chad Henne. Yeah. Patriots 30, Dolphins 19
Oakland at Denver--Yet another tough division rivalry and two teams that legitimately hate each other. But can someone tell me how the Raiders get this Monday night game in Week 1 every year? Broncos 23, Raiders 17
Season record: 1-0

NFL Picks: Thursday Night Special
Hey everyone.....he we are, another NFL season! The training camp and preseason were pretty much a blur, and now we're focused on games that count. Please bookmark me and let's have some fun this year....
New Orleans at Green Bay--There will be no frozen tundra at this point of the season, and while both of these teams have explosive offenses, I can't help but think about last year's opener between the Vikings and Saints that ended up something like 14-9 or 14-10. Both of tonight's teams have good defenses too, but I will eat my hat if the Packers do not score more than 14 points. Packers 27, Saints 20

NFL Picks: Super Bowl 45
Last week (2 weeks ago): 2-0
Postseason record: 5-5
Green Bay vs. Pittsburgh--So here we are. All the marbles, the whole enchilada and all that as Jon Gruden would say. Or at least I'm thinking of Gruden who said all that in some commercial for Monday Night Football. Anyway, we've come to this. The Green Bay Packers against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl 45, the first time these two storied franchises have met for the title.
The Packers are explosive on offense, but much better on defense than they typically get credit for. The Steelers are one of the best defensive teams in the NFL, and their offense is no slouch, either. In fact, you could say the Steelers don't get the credit they deserve for their offense. So we have an explosive offense vs. a stingy defense on one side; and an underrated offense against an underrated defense on the other. Could this game be decided by special teams? Quite possibly, and if that's the case, I'll take my chances with Green Bay's Mason Crosby over Pittsburgh's Shaun Suisham in a heartbeat. And I'll use that for the basis of my pick--Packers 20, Steelers 17
Enjoy the game, everyone, and please, if you have a few cocktails at a party, don't get behind the wheel.
